Hello my name is Mya!

Amazona ochrocephala oratory

I am a Double Yellow Headed Amazon in my 20s. I arrived at The Hamilton Aviary in 2008 when I could no longer be taken care of by my owner. Did you know there are 33 different types of Amazon Parrots alone? We all have green bodies, but normally have an extra colour or two that separates us from each other. Many of us are named by what colour we are other than green and where that colour is. For example I have a yellow crown and nape making me Double Yellow, but there are also Yellow-naped Amazons and Yellow Crowned Amazons.

What I Can Say

Hello, Mya, Alouette & Siren, Baby, Cat noises

About Me and Other
DYH Amazons

My ancestors lived in Mexico and Central America including Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. These birds like subtropical and tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, and coastal areas where there are tree available for nesting. In the wild, many Amazons only live into their 20s to 30s, whereas I, as a companion bird, could comfortably live 60-90 years.

DYH Amazons are often seen as an appealing "pet" because, like the African Greys, they are very good at talking. Some â€‹â€‹are even quite good at singing and opera seems to be the favourite of many Amazons. However, just like all companion birds we take lots of care, time, and training to live happy lives in captivity.

Double Yellow Headed Amazons have also featured in several tv show and movies, adding to their popularity. They have held roles on Only Murders in the Building (2021), Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chef (2008), and Bewitched (1969).

As a result of extreme poaching, deforestation, and insufficient protection measures, DYH Amazons are classified as an Endangered species.

Between 1970 and 1994 there was a 90% population decline due to the loss of 77% of its habitat to make way for agriculture. To this day, these parrots remain under heavy pressure from increasing development, poaching, and illegally set fires.

What I'm up to Now

I was adopted by a FOTA Board Member!

When the sanctuary at Oak Knoll Drive closed its doors, I moved to Dundas to live with my new family and feathered little brother Kai the Parrotlet. I've been thriving in my new home! Hopefully you'll be able to see me in my role as an Ambassador Bird for The Hamilton Aviary once I get a bit more comfortable!
